June 27, 2005 -- On June 4th, 2005, a PowerScore instructor
took the SAT and discovered an error in a multiple choice
question in a Writing section of the test. After the exam,
Vicki Wood contacted the College Board, the administrators
of the SAT, to report the error. On June 16th, 2005 the Educational
Testing Service (ETS) responded by identifying and admitting
the error.
It is
not surprising that Ms. Wood discovered the mistake, as she
is an SAT Writing section expert, and the author of PowerScore’s
forthcoming SAT Grammar Bible. Not coincidentally, on her
most recent SAT she recorded a perfect score on the multiple
choice portion of the Writing section.
ETS noted
that the question appeared in a “variable” section
that does not count towards final SAT scores, and so no student
results were impacted by the error. The variable section is
an unscored section that appears on every SAT, and is used
to test questions that will appear on future SATs.
The SAT
is a critical determinant in college admissions, and is often
a more important factor than a student’s GPA.
