When to Take the SAT

You should take your first SAT during the spring of your junior year. Because the SAT is considered a junior-level test, it is wise to take the exam when junior-level material is still current in your mind. The test is offered in May and June; choose the administration that works best with your end-of-school-year schedule.

Although PowerScore recommends taking the test during your junior year, it is extremely important that you are fully prepared prior to taking the SAT. Colleges receive and look at all of your SAT scores; although some schools claim to look only at the highest score from each section, it seems natural that an admissions counselor might question an applicant whose first attempt produced a dreadful score. Be sure that you have completed Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II before taking the test. If you high school offers a grammar course, take this as well prior to registering for the SAT. Be sure to download and take the free practice test from College Board (www.collegeboard.com). The accompanying score report will help you determine if you are ready for the SAT. If you find that you need additional help, consider a prep course. PowerScore instructors are SAT experts who can help you unlock the secrets of the test.

If your spring score does not meet your expectations, you have several more opportunities to try again during the fall of your senior year. In fact, most students take the test two or three times. The test is offered in October, November, December, and January, although some colleges may not accept scores from the January administration. Seriously consider an SAT prep course prior to retaking the test; most companies guarantee that your score will improve. Students in PowerScore's Full-Length Course are guaranteed a 300 point increase, while students in the weekend course are guaranteed a 150 point increase.
